Nicole Ari Parker is an American stage and film actress who is known for her role as the fiery lawyer Teri Joseph in the Showtime show Soul Food. Nikki Kodjoe became her stage name upon her marriage. Contractor trained in classical ballet in Toronto. She also excelled academically. She attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts. Contractor decided to take acting more seriously at age of 16, after ten years dancing. She was awarded a full scholarship to pursue a degree at the University of Toronto after graduating. The university offered her master's degree in theatre as well as a double major in social and psychology. Contractor auditioned at the prestigious Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada, for Pericles. After one full year, she was awarded the role of lead. Her work was highly acclaimed throughout the 92 productions which she was a part of. The play won her an award in 2002, which was awarded to the most outstanding production of the Year by Canadian Critics. The actress accepted an invitation to join Stratford's conservatory. It is a place which allows just four men and eight women can take the 20-week crash course of classical theater. Contractor received a guaranteed place for the next season. She was also offered the part as Hermia.
